"Helping people changing lives"
The fight against child trafficking in the Arusha and Manyara regions of Tanzania is a complex and heartbreaking story, one marked by both significant challenges and inspiring acts of resistance. These regions, with their proximity to major transportation routes and porous borders, unfortunately serve as transit points and destinations for trafficked girls. The impact is devastating, affecting individuals, families, and communities in profound ways.
Many girls are lured from rural areas with promises of education or employment in urban centers like Arusha. Others are abducted or sold by family members facing extreme poverty. Once trafficked, they are often forced into various forms of exploitation, including commercial sexual exploitation. This is a tragically common form of exploitation, leaving girls vulnerable to sexually transmitted infections, unwanted pregnancies, physical and psychological trauma, and social stigma. Girls are forced to work long hours in private households with little or no pay, facing abuse and neglect. They are often isolated and unable to seek help. This might involve working in agriculture, mining, or other industries under harsh conditions with little or no compensation. Girls are coerced into marriage, often to much older men, losing their childhood and facing potential violence and abuse. The Impact of these acts is severe including child trafficking are far-reaching leaving victims suffer from severe psychological distress, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety. Physical health is also significantly impacted. Families are torn apart by the loss of a child, often facing financial hardship and social stigma. The shame associated with trafficking can further isolate them.
The later can lead to the loss of young girls weakens communities, disrupting social structures and hindering development. The prevalence of trafficking can create a climate of fear and distrust.
Trafficking undermines economic development by exploiting vulnerable populations and reducing productivity. The costs of healthcare and social services needed to address the aftermath of trafficking place a strain on resources.
The story of child trafficking in Arusha and Manyara is not just a story of exploitation, but also a story of resilience, hope, and the ongoing struggle for justice and freedom for vulnerable girls. It requires a collective effort from governments, NGOs, communities, and individuals to bring an end to this horrific practice.
This is Rhoda, a 13-year-old girl who was about to be forced into marriage after finishing her 7th grade. Her father was preparing for her wedding, but thanks to a Good Samaritan who informed us, Amazing Grace Widows and Orphans Tanzania (AGWOT) stepped in to rescue her.
Rhoda dreams of becoming an advocate for girls’ and women’s rights, ensuring that no girl goes through what she almost did. But she is not alone—many other girls in our community are at risk of child marriage and trafficking.

The dust swirled around Pamela’s worn sandals as she trudged along the rutted track leading to Mswakini Secondary School. Aching feet and a heavy heart were her constant companions. She was one of the many ‘poor girls’ in Monduli District, a reality etched onto her face with the faint lines of worry and exhaustion.
Her family couldn’t afford school fees, uniform, or even the daily necessities that fueled the other girls’ preparations. For weeks, Pamela had existed on a meager diet of maize and beans, her stomach rumbling a constant reminder of her struggles. Today, her backpack was lighter than usual – a few tattered notebooks, a borrowed pencil, and a prayer for a miracle.
She wasn’t alone. Groups of girls, their faces pale with hunger and trepidation, shuffled past her. Stories of missed school days, of dreams deferred, were whispered amongst them – a chorus of unspoken aspirations lost in the dust of poverty. Their vibrant laughter, once a familiar soundtrack of school life, had faded to a subdued murmur.
As Pamela entered the school gates, the familiar sounds of boisterous students were drowned out by the gnawing emptiness in her stomach. The sight of brightly colored uniforms, sleek backpacks, and well-fed faces felt like a cruel mockery. She felt a pang of despair, a sense of isolation so profound it choked her.
She found a secluded corner, her eyes welling up with unshed tears. This was the beginning of another uphill battle, another attempt to climb the mountain of education, while others seemed to glide effortlessly.
Suddenly, a soft voice broke the silence. It was Ms. Asha, a teacher known for her compassion and tireless dedication to helping students in need. She had been an advocate for the girls for years. Ms. Asha noticed Pamela’s presence and approached her.
“Pamela, my dear,” she said, her voice gentle. “What troubles you?”
Pamela, ashamed and afraid of judgment, explained her plight. Ms. Asha listened patiently; her expression full of empathy. She knew many stories like Pamela’s.
“Pamela,” Ms. Asha said, her eyes twinkling. “We’ve been working with the local community to establish a sponsorship program for deserving students. We’ve been able to help many children like you. Why don’t you apply?”
Pamela’s heart leaped. A sponsorship! Hope bloomed like a fragile flower in the desolate landscape of her despair. Ms. Asha showed her how to fill out the application form, encouraging her, reminding her of her potential.
Days turned into weeks. Pamela, fueled by Ms. Asha’s encouragement, filled the forms meticulously, detailing her family’s struggles and her unwavering desire for education. She submitted her application, a tiny ripple of hope in the vast ocean of her circumstances.
Finally, the day arrived when Pamela received a call. It was Ms. Asha, her voice filled with a warmth that radiated across the miles. Pamela had been awarded a sponsorship!
Tears streamed down her face as she embraced Ms. Asha. The struggle hadn’t vanished, but a beacon of hope had ignited in her heart. She was back in school, no longer defined by poverty, but by her resilience, her determination, and her newfound confidence. The dust of despair began to lift, replaced by the promise of a brighter future.
